With each genetic engineering technique, of course there are going to be pros and cons.
Advantages of Biolistics:
- It is a rapid and simple procedure.
- No binary vector is required - Biolistics needs less number of cells to work. - Can be used on most plant and cell tissues. Disadvantages of Biolistics: - Requires special instruments. - High cost of the equipment. - In early stages of development. |
Advantages of Agrobacterium:
- A reduction in transgene numbers.
- Intact and stable migration of the newly introduced gene into the plant genome. - DNA with defined ends and minimal rearrangements. - The transfer of relatively large segments of DNA. - Integration of small numbers of copies of genes into plant chromosomes. Disadvantages of Agrobacterium: - Time consuming. - Not all kind of cells can be treated by this method. - Can not transform organelles. - Sometimes leads to false positive results. |
Advantages of Electroporation:
- Effective with nearly all cell types.
- Only small amounts of DNA are required. Disadvantages of Electroporation: - If the pulses are at the wrong intensity, the cell can become damaged. - Material is non-specific which means and improper cell function. |
Advantages + disadvantages of GMO's:
- GMO's create plants better resistant to weeds, pest and other diseases.
- Bigger yields to create more efficient use of land, less uses of herbicides and other pesticides. - Foods with better texture, flavour and nutritional value. - Foods with a longer shelf life for easier shipping. - GM foods can create an essential sustainable way to feed the world. - GMOs could be dangerous to some insects. This is because the new genes of the crops can be deadly to certain insects like butterflies that are not actually dangerous to crops. - GMOs don't taste good as compared to naturally produced crops. - It doesn’t need enough pesticide because the crop itself is dangerous to some insects. - Genetically modified crops may also cause a threat to the environment. This is because it is not a natural way to plant and cultivate crops. |
